SPEAKERS: Frank Sweeney, Paul O’ Neill
Frank Sweeney is an artist with a research based practice, using found material to approach questions of collective memory, experience and identity through film and sound.
Frank discussed no_matter_here, an on-going digital artwork, web zine and exhibition that connects the work of artists exploring pre-millenium networks as potential sites of technological emancipation. The project was made in collaboration with Cóilín O’Connell and features commissioned work from Eva Richardson McCrea, Rachel O’Dwyer, Roo Honeychild, Michelle Doyle, Paul O’Neill, Gary Merrin, Aoife O’Toole and Anthony O’Conner.
There was a screening of People enjoy my company (featured on no_matter_here), a film exploring the privatisation of Telecom Éireann from the viewpoint of shareholders communicating on early online forums. The film connects this event with ideologies of technological emancipation, euphoria and online communication in the lead up to the millennium.
Paul O’ Neill is an artist and researcher currently based in Dublin.
His practice and research are concerned with the implications of our collective dependency on networked technologies and infrastructures. He has presented and exhibited his work at various cultural institutions and events including Science Gallery (Dublin), Ars Electronica festival (Linz) and Inspace (Edinburgh) and is currently completing a PhD focusing on media art practices that critique and subvert techno-solutionist narratives and histories.
Paul discussed his ongoing research on the physical and corporate infrastructures of the internet in Ireland.
